All Around You

A home for creative community media.

Okay, I have to admit that this week Cass and I were a bit lazy. Well, perhaps it was just me. Everything seemed muddled. We started working on another one of the ‘How To’ articles that Cass has been doing over the Internship, but this time it was for the Flip Camera. Now, I initially thought we’d have this done by mid morning. However, the fact that Cass and I had conveniently positioned ourselves out on the cosy warehouse couch did not exactly create an environment for a focussed effort. So, when 11am strolled round we found that we had done very little other than discussing the weekend (whoops). But, we managed to quickly scrabble the instructional guide together by lunch at least. This guide was intended to simultaneously function as a written article and video script for the All Around You site.

In the afternoon we constructed a shot list to go with our Flip script. This outlined the particular types of shots that were appropriate for each part of the script (i.e. medium long establishing shot, close up, etc.). I really wanted to go for a cheesy Star Trek/2001: Space Odyssey moment at the beginning of the video by doing a full rotation around the Flip camera from a low angle (Strauss and all). But much to my dismay keeping the camera steady enough for this was beyond my capabilities (disappointment). Anyway, Cass and I went through each shot we had specified with me fulfilling the role as camera operator and Cass as our ever-graceful hand model. By the end of the day we had successfully done about three quarters of the filming for the video.

The next morning we had intended to come back to our filming and quickly finish it off but the HD camera we had been using was out. So . . . we had to start again!!! We quickly filmed all the necessary shots for the second time on a standard camera, taking photos of the process as we went along. I think I rushed this way too much because when it came to capturing the footage later in the afternoon I found bits missing (which we are going to have to quickly re-shoot). The up side of this is that I will be able to give my sci-fi rotation another try he he.
